2026 Q3 or Q5? How to Choose the Right Audi SUV

Two Audi SUVs. Both equipped with quattro all-wheel drive, turbocharged four-cylinder engines, and the brand's latest digital interior technology. At first glance, the 2026 Audi Q3 and the 2026 Audi Q5 can seem like close cousins — but spend a little time with each and the differences become clear. One is a nimble, tech-forward compact built for city life. The other is a roomier, more capable mid-size SUV aimed at families and drivers who need more from their vehicle every day.

Performance and Powertrains

Both SUVs share the same 2.0 L TFSI four-cylinder architecture and seven-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission, with standard quattro all-wheel drive. That shared foundation means both deliver responsive acceleration and confident handling in Windsor's mixed driving conditions — whether you're on the 401 or navigating side streets in the winter.

That said, the numbers do differ. The Q3 produces 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque, reaching 100 km/h in an estimated 5.9 seconds. The Q5 steps up to 268 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, hitting 100 km/h in an estimated 6.2 seconds. The Q3 is actually quicker off the line despite the lower output figures — a result of its lighter kerb weight. The Q5's extra torque pays off differently: at highway speeds and when loaded.

Fuel economy is nearly identical between the two. The Q3 returns an estimated 10.8 L/100 km city, 8.1 L/100 km highway, and 9.6 L/100 km combined. The Q5 comes in at 11.0 city, 8.1 highway, and 9.7 combined. For most drivers in Ontario, the real-world difference will be minimal.


Size and Interior Space

This is where the two vehicles separate most clearly. The Q5 rides on a longer wheelbase — 2,817 mm versus the Q3's 2,682 mm — and that difference translates directly into rear-seat legroom and overall cabin comfort for taller passengers or a full family.

Cargo volume tells the same story:

  • Q3: ~708 L with all seats up; ~1,415 L with the rear bench folded
  • Q5: ~782 L with all seats up; ~1,611 L with the rear bench folded

Both models offer sliding and reclining rear seats as standard, giving you flexibility depending on whether you're hauling people or gear. The Q5 simply gives you more of both.

If you regularly drive three or four adults on longer trips — say, a weekend run to Niagara-on-the-Lake or heading through the tunnel into Detroit for events — the Q5's extra room will matter. For one or two passengers and everyday Windsor errands, the Q3 holds its own.


Towing Capacity

This is the most significant practical difference between the two vehicles. The Q3 has a towing capacity of approximately 680 kg (1,500 lbs). That's enough for a small trailer, a pair of kayaks, or light recreational cargo.

The Q5 is in a different category entirely, rated at approximately 1,996 kg (4,400 lbs) when properly equipped. For drivers who tow a boat on Lake Erie, a snowmobile trailer, or a landscaping trailer, the Q5 is the clear choice. If towing factors into your purchase decision at all, this number likely settles the question.


Technology and Interior Features

Both the Q3 and Q5 carry Audi's current Digital Stage MMI interface — a paired instrument cluster and central MMI touch display in a curved, driver-oriented layout. The Q3 brings this full-size class technology down to the compact segment for the first time, which is a genuine upgrade over the outgoing model.

Both vehicles use Android Automotive OS, with access to the Audi Application Store directly through the MMI — no smartphone connection required. An AI-enriched Audi assistant appears as an on-screen avatar and responds to voice commands to control a range of vehicle functions.

The Q3 comes with the Audi Digital Stage setup featuring an 11.9-inch instrument cluster and 12.8-inch MMI touch display. The Q5 pairs an 11.9-inch virtual cockpit with a 14.5-inch MMI touch display, and on higher trims, adds an available passenger display. Both offer available head-up displays and ambient lighting.

For the technology-forward buyer, both vehicles deliver a modern, connected experience. The Q5 offers a slightly larger display and additional options at higher trim levels, but day-to-day, the experience in the Q3 is genuinely comparable.


Which One is Right for You?

Neither vehicle is a compromise — they serve different buyers well.

The Q3 may suit you better if:

  • You want a compact SUV that's easy to park and manoeuvre in Windsor's downtown or tight lots
  • Fuel economy is a priority and the difference matters
  • You don't tow and don't regularly carry more than two or three passengers
  • You want Audi's latest technology and design in a more accessible size

The Q5 may suit you better if:
